Math and Music: What do you think?

It’s time to see how convincing I’ve been with these last two posts. What do you think? Can the study of math have an impact on music?

  1. Math definitely plays a role in music. I remember taking a music history course and the professor discussed math and music. I don’t remember completely, but I think it was the Catholic Church that banned odd numbers of notes or levels or something. Clearly, that course was not committed to my long term memory! I also know that my boyfriend, who loves math, prefers ‘complex’ music with more intrigue patterns than the typical music.

    • A good point! Often times the pattern recognition that goes into math can help sort some of the more complex musical works. A fugue by Bach, for example, can be enjoyed by people who just study music and by people who just study math, but it really comes alive when people study both.
